About the Artist – The Fine Art of Drawing with Fire

A native Rhode Islander & life-long artist, Cate's award-winning pyrography illustrations are exhibited in museums, galleries and juried art shows. (Shows & Exhibits list)

Cate's board is covered in cork to protect the surface underneath. Cork also keeps the paper from slipping. She sometimes uses a magnifying glass for extreme detail.

In 2013 Cate was elected as a member to the Art League of RI. Her first Solo Exhibit was at the Audubon Society of RI in Nov-Dec 2015. In November 2017 she was selected to become a Juried Artist Member of the Wickford Art Association.

Cate has been a professional illustrator, graphic artist, photographer & writer for decades. Beginning as a teenage apprentice in a commercial art & photography studio, she was trained by senior-level artists at the “school of hard knocks.”

At the University of RI, Narragansett Bay Campus, further Cate honed her pen & ink skills hand-illustrating maps of the ocean floor long before there were any computer technologies that could handle the task.

While president of McCauley Coren Design Group in Providence, RI, Cate worked with corporate clients such as The City of Warwick, The Providence Performing Arts Center & Roger Williams Park & Zoo.

Cate also served as a Governor's appointee to the Providence–Warwick Convention & Visitor's Bureau Board of Directors. She has researched & written about RI history. As a licensed private investigator working for the federal court system, Cate did extensive research on the Oklahoma City Bombing case. Her research & notes will be donated to the National Memorial Museum in OKC.

Cate & her husband Leon Couturier live in West Greenwich, RI. Besides creating & exhibiting her pyrographic illustrations (and being a web wizard in-training) Cate is a designer & project manager for Liberty Remodeling LLC. She also works on furniture refinishing & upholstery projects.
